In vitro fertilization, explained step by step
IVF means retrieving eggs, fertilizing them with sperm in the laboratory and transferring the embryo to the uterus. It is the treatment with the most stages, which is why we walk through it together, one at a time.
What it's like, step by step

Workup and plan
We review your tests and your partner's. You leave the visit with a plan drawn on a sheet of paper, with dates.

Ovarian stimulation
Medication for a few days so several eggs mature at once. We monitor with ultrasound.
- 03
Egg retrieval
A short, sedated, ultrasound-guided procedure. Sperm is prepared the same day.
- 04
Fertilization in the lab
The embryologist combines eggs and sperm and watches the embryos develop over the following days.
- 05
Transfer
The embryo is placed in the uterus. No anesthesia needed. Remaining embryos can be frozen.
- 06
The wait and the test
A few days later, the pregnancy test. You are in direct contact with the doctor throughout.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an IVF cycle take?
Roughly four to six weeks from the start of stimulation to the pregnancy test, depending on the protocol.
Does it hurt?
Egg retrieval is done under sedation; the transfer feels similar to a Pap smear. Stimulation injections are subcutaneous and you learn to give them at home.
